Bride Guide #59 is tips on Cutting the Cake and the Garter Toss by Brigham City UT Wedding Photographer Lauren Kay Photography.

We covered all the details about the cake in the Cake section. But to recap. Whatever treat you are
sharing together, whether it’s cake or something else, it symbolizes the first of many adventures you get
to share together. It can be a private or a public event. It’s up to you! Just relax and do it your way.
Cutting the cake is usually done where there is a natural break in the festivities, like after dinner, before
the first dance, or as the last event of the evening.
The garter. You’re probably either excited to have one, definitely against it, or dreading it. Right? It is
totally up to you and your groom and your personalities. Be open-minded. If it is something your groom
really wants but you don’t, get creative! You don’t have to make it a public production. If it makes you
feel uncomfortable doing it in public, it can be something you do once you get to your hotel, just
between the two of you. Ask your groom if it matters to him and be on the same page about how it’s
going to go down.
We covered the bouquet toss in the Florals section. To recap, I think this is a great time to break away
from tradition and do something a bit more meaningful like giving flowers to the people who have really
meant the most to you in your life. You can see the Florals section for specific tips.

If you choose to do a garter…
Pull your dress up and put your leg out. Be candid. If you’re doing it in public, don’t look at the camera
and keep your eyes on your groom, especially if you’re nervous. Place it where you want. It’s
traditionally placed slightly above the knee but it’s totally up to you. And you don’t have to wear it all
day! If it’s uncomfortable, wait until right before and slip out to put it on. After he gets it, you can do the
toss but I recommend just keeping it! When you pick out your garter, choose something classy or pick
out something meaningful to your groom since it will be a surprise for him.
