Bride guide # 27 is all about picking the perfect veil and accessories by provo utah wedding photographer lauren kay photography
You guys. I love veils now. So much. But when I was planning my wedding, I was convinced I didn’t want one. When it comes to your accessories and veil, have an open mind. You may fall in love with something you weren’t expecting.
There are so many veil options. Trim or no? What length? The fabric and lay of it? If you choose to have a veil, choose the length and style that matches your dress best, and the overall theme for your wedding.
Veils are gorgeous, but there are so many other beautiful accessories that you can wear in your hair in addition to or in place of a veil. Floral crowns, laurel wreaths, flower clips, other hair clips, loose flowers or pearls. There are so many beautiful options. Experiment and see what you love. Whether you opt for a veil or another hair piece or nothing at all, do whatever you feel most beautiful in.
Besides hair accessories, depending on your dress and style you may also want earrings, a necklace, a bracelet, and a special perfume (we’ll get to shoes in a minute). Accessories are a great place to add meaning. Maybe ask your dad or groom to buy you a special necklace or pair of earrings. Maybe you can wear an heirloom bracelet. Maybe you and your mom are going to wear matching jewelry. Find ways to make these little details special.

Here are eight things to consider when choosing your wedding jewelry:
- Is your hair going to be up or down? Your earrings and necklace will stand out more when your hair is up.
- What is the neckline of your dress like? That may determine if you want a necklace and what length to get.
- What color and style is your dress? Pick jewelry that complements your dress. Start with your dress in mind, rather than with a particular type of jewelry you want.
- Will your bracelet snag? You definitely don’t want a bracelet that will snag your dress.
- Match your metals and stones. Try to match the metal and stones of your jewelry with the metal and stone of your ring and any beadwork on your dress.
- Wear what you’re comfortable in. If you never wear bracelets, probably don’t wear one. Stay close to your everyday style.
- What is its purpose? Do you want this jewelry to be an heirloom that is passed down, or is it just for your wedding? Remember, the pictures will preserve its beauty.
- Sometimes less is more.

Veil budget tips:
- Borrow! This is definitely a great time to borrow from a friend.
- Find an inexpensive one online.
- Make your own. Hit up the fabric store and make your own veil.
When wearing a veil…
- Remember, you can always take it out if you want.
- Don’t be afraid of jazzing it up with an additional hair accessory.
- Pin it. Pin it good. You don’t want to be distracted by your veil falling out.
- Beware the huggers. People will tug on your veil when they hug you. Let your head lean back when you’re hugging so your veil doesn’t get pulled off.
Jewelry budget tip:
- Get your jewelry from somewhere like Walmart, Charming Charlies, or Etsy. There are so many inexpensive jewelry options that look absolutely stunning.
- Wear an heirloom item like your grandmother’s bracelet.
Real brides…
- Wore their grandmother’s wedding ring
- Wore a bracelet her groom had given her that had the coordinates of their sealing room engraved on it
- Wore a pearl necklace her dad got for her
- Wore a matching necklace with her mom
- Wore a necklace her groom bought her
