Have you seen those pictures of couples getting married at the top of a mountain? Or on a beach?
Destination weddings and elopements are becoming more and more popular. But is it for you?

1. Do we have a lot of family and friends we want to include in our wedding?

If you have a lot of family and friends you want present, doing a destination wedding or
eloping may not be what would be most meaningful for you. But if you’d rather it be a super
small gathering, or even just the two of you, these are great options.

2. Do we want a really intimate day?

Destination weddings and elopements are small, close-knit, and intimate. If that is
something you want, getting married somewhere exotic can be a great way to make it even
more memorable.

2. Do we love to travel?

If you two live and breathe traveling, a destination wedding might be for you! Plus, then
you’re already where you need to be for your honeymoon.

2. What is our budget like?

If you have a very small budget, a really close-knit elopement or just the two of you can be a
good way to still spend money on the things that matter to you. Or if you have enough in
your budget to fly your friends and family somewhere for a destination wedding, maybe you
should!

2. Are there other things we should consider?

What is the weather going to be like and would it be nice to be somewhere else? What are
your relationships like with your family and friends? Do you need to get married quickly?
Would you rather spend your money on an experience together or on nicer things? Would
it be stressful to be planning a wedding in a different place? Think about all the factors and
write your own pros and cons list.

It’s important to note that you still need to get some things done even if you go this route. You definitely
need a marriage license, someone to marry you, and witnesses. Other than that, how elaborate you
want to make it is up to you. Do you want a dress? A photographer? Bouquet? I recommend making it as
special as possible so that it still feels like your wedding. Just remember that eloping and destination
weddings do still take some prior planning.

Consider a small-scale destination wedding. For example, my husband and I lived in Northern Utah when
we got married. We got married in the early spring when it is still super cold. It could have been a fun
option to get sealed down in Southern Utah and then have our celebration there. Southern Utah was
only a five hour drive and is considerably warmer. That way our wedding would’ve been close enough
for family and friends to come but still a destination wedding somewhere warmer and more beautiful
that time of year.
