The wedding trends, traditions, advice, and norms are literally endless. But are they really what you and your groom want? This wedding planning podcast episode is SO important because we dive into how and why it’s so important to do what you want to do.

You’ve heard it a million times: it’s your wedding day. But do you believe it? In a recent survey , I asked over 50 brides what they are glad they did and wish they would’ve done differently in their wedding. And the biggest thing I learned is that everyone wants different things – because we’re all different! Literally there are people who said they wish they would’ve rented their dress and others who say they wish they would’ve bought it. So the bottom line is. You are unique. Which means your wedding should be unique as well.

So one of my biggest pieces of advice is to plan your wedding to match your personalities. Think about what your personalities are. Are you the life of party or sweating buckets? Are flowers and lights are your favorite things?

Your wedding should be as unique as the two of you are.

As couples we’re different and often that’s what attracts us to each other. So when there is dissonance between what you want and your groom wants, communicate. If you communicate a ton, you’ll be able to figure it out together. And if it’s not a big deal to you then it’s a good time to compromise.

Certain traditions may not be for everyone and that’s okay. You don’t have to uphold any traditions or expectations that people have for you. This is your wedding day and plan it to be just that.

Also it’s so important to express yourselves! The best weddings are ones where your personalities come through. Share your favorite dessert, have your reception in a hangar if your husband is a pilot, have musical performances if your families are super musical, have flowers everywhere if they’re your favorite. If you’re die hard Star Wars fans then by all means you can have a Star Wars wedding if you want. You get the idea. Letting your personalities come through is one of the best ways to make your wedding what you want. Plan your wedding to express who you are and your unique story.

Yep girl, you do you. And by you I mean both of you. You’ve heard it at least a million times. This is your wedding day. Right? But let me say that again. This is YOUR wedding day. If I could help you understand one thing, it would be this.

Forget tradition, bag your parents’ expectations, never mind what your best friend did for her wedding. Girl, this is your wedding! Stop comparing. Don’t let other people’s expectations rule your life! Follow your heart and don’t worry about what anyone else wants or expects. It’s okay to do things differently. This is your celebration. So it can and should be about what you and your sweetheart want.

The biggest piece of advice in the survey was HANDS DOWN to do what you want. So from me and 50 plus brides out there, trust us when we say do what you want. This is YOUR wedding day so make it what you two want.
