Bride Guide #46 gives you 5 tips on cutting the cake by American Fork Utah Wedding Photographer Lauren Kay Photography.
Now, it’s likely that you’ve never stood in front of a crowd while people watched and photographed you slicing a piece of cake before. It can feel a little awkward, especially if you feel like you have no idea what you’re doing. Here are five tips to nailing your cake cutting:

Remember your personalities? Think about if you would rather cut your cake without people watching or if you want it to be an event. If you want it to be public, cut it when there’s a natural break in the festivities (like right after dinner, before the first dance, or the last event of the evening). If you’d prefer to do it without people watching, just let your photographer know and make it an intimate event for the two of you.
This is also totally up to your personalities! If you or your groom think it would be fun to smash the cake, go for it. Keep in mind how messy you’ll get, especially if you’re renting your dress. What’s most important is that you talk about it beforehand.
You need a cake knife, and a server is optional. You’ll also want a plate, two forks, and some napkins. Have someone put these on the cake table right before you’re ready to cut the cake.
The bride stands closest to the cake with the groom behind her. Stand at an angle so that the cake isn’t blocking your faces. The bride grabs the knife and the groom places his hand on top of the bride’s. Holding the knife together, cut into the cake. Make another slice, connecting the cuts to form a wedge. Use the knife (the server is messy) to lift the slice onto the plate. Grab your fork and feed each other the first bite at the same time. Smashing? It’s up to you!
Have fun with it! You can follow the steps above or really just go for it. It may feel a little awkward and that’s okay. Just focus on each other and that it’s symbolizing the first of many adventures you get to enjoy together.

Don’t worry…
Your baker will usually handle transporting the cake or give you instructions to keep it safe.
● Do a small, one-tiered cake and dress it up by using a tall stand or table and decorating the display table.
● Forgo the cake topper and use flowers to decorate your cake.
● Borrow the cake knife and server from a family member or friend.
● Rent the cake board or stand from your baker.
