Boxes. Soooo many boxes. We moved again! And as a Utah wedding photographer, I’m glad this move isn’t taking us out of Utah.
I don’t know about you, but moving isn’t really on the top of my list of my favorite things to do ????. Especially the packing up and unpacking part. But through our moves, I’ve found 5 tips that have helped make each move easier and more enjoyable. Enjoy!

1. Prepare.
Get all the supplies you need, make a game plan, plan out all your meals leading up to your move so you can use up all the food that you can, plan on eating out the last few meals. Enlist people for babysitting and loading and any other help you may need. Designate a place in your house to put all the boxes so that they’re not in the way. Do what you can to have a plan and stay (as much as you can when moving) organized. Here are some of my must-have supplies for moving: stretch wrap, packing tape, bubble wrap, furniture sliders (these things are amazing), packing paper (or just use sheets of paper if you don’t have much), mattress and couch covers, and (of course) boxes!
2. Simplify.
Go through your things as you pack them and get rid of things! This one is my number one tip. If you haven’t used it in a while, don’t keep it. Moving is a great opportunity to go through things and simplify. Our first move, we just threw everything in boxes and kept so much we didn’t need. The next time we moved, I went though everything. It felt so good. And we had less we had to pack up! My favorite book about decluttering is “The Simplified Life” by Emily Ley.
3. Label.
You start packing up and you’re super good about labeling what’s in each box… at the beginning. And by the middle of the process, each box just says “Misc”. Right? I’m totally guilty of this too! Last time we tried to be super specific about what was in each box and it made moving in sooooo much easier.
4. Go small.
Remember to think about how heavy these boxes will be to carry around. I’ve totally made the mistake of packing a large box full of books. Oops! Use small boxes when you can. And when you have large items, use a large box and then offset the weight by adding light items like clothes or blankets.
5. Just start.
Last, but not least, just get started. Packing an entire house? It is so overwhelming! The only way to eat an elephant is one bit at a time though, right? So most importantly, just start. Don’t worry about it being perfect or waiting until the perfect time. Inevitably you’ll pack things you still needed to use, or realize you don’t have a toaster to toast your bread with, it’s all just a part of the fun! Embrace the chaos and go for it!

Once you move in, jump into unpacking and get it done as fast as you can. Done is better than perfect. And do fun things to help make your new place feel like your home – baking cookies, holiday decorating, and (obviously) hanging pictures! It helps so much if you make your home feel like a home right off the bat. And remember to change your address with the post office and other places like banks and insurances, cancel any previous bills like utilities, and make new friends!
