1. Displaying it.

You’ll need a separate table or a space on your dessert table to display your cake. You can even use something fun like a barrel. Be creative! If you use a table, you’ll want to use a nice table or have a nice linen on it. Colored linen, flowers at the base, a cake board, or a cake stand help the cake stand out. You want to keep in mind the ratio of the size of the cake to the table. If the cake is smaller, a tall stand or table helps it look better. Choose a nice
backdrop for your cake. If you’re outside, keep it in the shade so it doesn’t melt. It may even need to be kept in a fridge until you’re ready to cut it. Talk with your baker about how to keep your cake safe if your celebration is outside.

2. Remember the little extras.

Remember to grab a cake knife (a server is optional) and any fun things you want to use to decorate – flowers, candlesticks, toppers, stands, boards, etc. You can often rent cake boards and stands from your baker.

3. Let them eat cake!

Wedding cakes used to be served to all the guests. Sometimes this is still the case, but more often than not, a different dessert is served. Don’t feel any pressure to use your cake as the dessert. If you do want to serve your cake, cut it early enough in the celebration for everyone to enjoy.

2. You don’t need to keep a tier.

Traditionally the top tier of the cake was kept until your first anniversary. We did this and it honestly was super anticlimactic and took up so much space in our freezer for a year. Instead, only freeze a small slice for your first anniversary. Or, better yet, go get your favorite dessert or bake a legit cake together!
